This week at the halfway point in the show, we are proud to have as our guest Arsham Parsi, leader of the Iranian Queer Organization, who has devoted himself to helping LGBT people in his homeland of Iran and aiding LGBT Iranians seeking asylum around the world. Parsi fled Iran in 2005 to Turkey and now does his lifesaving work as a volunteer from Toronto. He'll talk about gay life in Iran under President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, hiding gay Iranians in safe houses in Turkey, his outlook on US threats against Iran, and his hopes for the future of his native land. GAY USA for 2/21/08 with special guest New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn

The news this week is terrible. This past week, a 15-year old gender variant gay boy was allegedly murdered in front of horrified classmates by a 14-year old fellow student in an eighth grade classroom in Oxnard, California. We will tell you about the killing of Lawrence King, the state's intent to try his adolescent alleged killer as an adult, outpourings of grief from the student and LGBT communities, and the roots of these kinds of crimes.

Our guest in the second half of our program is out lesbian New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who holds the second most powerful office in the city. She will talk about her support for Hillary Clinton for President, her future political plans, her stands on such issues as the anti-gay St. Patrick's Day Parade, getting anti-bullying programs in the schools, the lack of good AIDS education in the schools, and the Bloomberg administration's record on civil liberties. We will offer the opportunity for an Obama surrogate to appear on a future program.

This week, Andy will review the "Macbeth" at BAM with Patrick Stewart, a play called "Grace" about atheism with Lynn Redgrave at the Lucille Lortel on Christopher Street, and one about race called "Unconditional" at the Public Theatrer.

This week on Gay USA, our guest is eminent gay law professor Arthur Leonard who will take us through the big win for same-sex marriage rights in an appellate court in New York State making it clear that legal same-sex marriages performed elsewhere such as in Canada MUST be recognized as legal marriage in New York, even though the state does not perform them. We will talk about that important case and others with Professor Leonard. You can read his analysis of this case and others online here.

We will kick off the show with analysis of the Super Duper Tuesday primary election results and how LGBT and AIDS issues and voters figured into the contests. Florida looks as if it is getting an anti-gay marriage ballot initiative this November. We will show you how the new domestic partners system is working in Oregon where it just kicked off. We’ll discuss the ex-gay movement and the progress of ex-ex-gays. There’s a Florida high school trying to ban mention of gay issues. HRC faces a transgender rights picket in Philadelphia. Andy has a review of a new off-Broadway play about how Iraqis who worked for Americans in Iraq have been thrown to the wolves.

This week on "Gay USA," we start off once again on the campaign trail where LGBT issues came up in remarks by Barack Obama in the Democratic debate and in his King Day speech and in a question to Hillary Clinton on the Tyra Banks show. On the Republican side, Mike Huckabee made what is essentially a gay rape joke in defense of the Confederate flag.

In other news, Cameroon is locking people up just for being gay. Andy will tell you how he was defamed in the New York Times. We will have an extended discussion on the staph infection scare and how it has been covered in the press, offering some useful advice on how to avoid infection. And we celebrate the best short documentary Academy Award nomination for Cynthia Wade's "Freeheld," about police Lt. Laurel Hester's fight for partner benefits in New Jersey as she also battled cancer.

We taped this week's "Gay USA" just before the news broke that Heath Ledger, whose breakthrough role was as a gay cowboy in "Brokeback Mountain," had tragically died at 28. We will talk about his legacy on next week's show.

We kick off this week's "Gay USA" with our analysis of the results of the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary, as well as gay and AIDS issues in the campaigns.
